Halo-Tex in a Nutshell

The HALO-TEX project is driving innovation at the crossroads of sustainability, circular economy, and biotechnology. Funded under the Horizon Europe framework, HALO-TEX demonstrates a transformative biorefinery approach from salt-tolerant plants that are grown on marginal land, into high-value textile materials, additives, and composites.
At its core, HALO-TEX addresses some of the most pressing environmental challenges facing the textile and biochemical industries. From reducing dependence on primary raw materials and freshwater use to lowering emissions, pollution, and waste, the project provides a new model for sustainable production across the value chain.
HALO-TEX aims to establish a circular and cost-effective biomanufacturing system that supports the European Green Deal, the EU Circular Economy Action Plan, and bioeconomy and textile strategies. Through innovative technologies, resource-efficient processes, and socially inclusive approaches, we are creating:
- Recyclable cellulose-based yarns and fabrics
- Bio-based additives and composites for high-pressure applications
- Tools for consumer engagement to support the adoption of sustainable products
- New value chains that open up socio-economic opportunities in rural and underused regions
The textile industry is one of the world's most resource-intensive sectors. HALO-TEX offers a solution by:
- Utilizing underexploited salt-tolerant biomass
- Implementing low-energy, low-chemical biorefinery processes
- Creating fully circular materials and products
- Supporting sorting, recycling, and consumer awareness
HALO-TEX unites leading experts, researchers, and innovators from across Europe. The consortium brings together 10 partners from 6 countries (Denmark, Belgium, Italy, Netherlands, Spain and Turkey). This partnership draws on the experience of previous Horizon projects, ensuring that our work builds on strong foundations and delivers impact across sectors and borders. Together, we aim to empower consumers, inspire industry transformation, and accelerate the shift towards a circular bioeconomy.
